Priority Legislative Initiatives

  • Election Day Registration (EDR)

    • H636: AN ACT RELATIVE TO ELECTION DAY REGISTRATION (SATELLITES) [REP. BENSON]

      • An individual who is eligible to vote may register on the day of an election by
appearing in person at the designated registration polling place, during the hours it is open for
voting, for the town in which the individual maintains residence. Eligible voters may also
register during the early voting period in designated early voting satellite locations within their
        town and or city.

        • UPDATE: Legislative Briefing May 15th Room 437

    • H685 & S396: AN ACT RELATIVE TO ELECTION DAY REGISTRATION [REP. MALIA & SEN. CREEM]

      • An individual who is eligible to vote may register on the day of an election by appearing in person at the polling place, during the hours it is open for voting, for the precinct in which the individual maintains a residence. Eligible voters may also register during the early voting period in designated early voting locations within their town and or city.

      • In 2016, Hundreds of Thousands of MA residents were disenfranchised due to the archaic 20-day mandatory cutoff to register and vote. With a 40 year proven history and with nearly half the nation eliminating their cutoff, it's time for Commonwealth to pass Election Day Registration.

      • EDR has been passed in the State Senate numerous times, the House has stalled.

  • Re-Precinct of Boston [HD 2318 - REP. MICHLEWITZ]

    • HD 2318AN ACT REGARDING DECENNIAL DIVISION OF WARDS AND PRECINCTS

      • Remove Boston’s outdated special exemption from re-precincting after
the Federal Census. Lack of re-precincting in Boston causes long lines of voters on Election Day
and wastes funds and resources by having precincts of significantly different sizes.

        • Boston is long overdue for an updated and redrawn precincts model to combat long lines at the polls. With an ever-changing demographic landscape, we must ensure that the ward lines correlate and represent the current communities of today's Boston and ensure more accessible, easy and timely voting locations for Boston residents.

        • UPDATE: Boston City Council and Mayor Walsh have filed Home Rule petition

  • Ranked-Choice Voting [H635 - REP BENSON, H719 - REP. VARGAS/ S406 - SEN. HINDS]

    • H635: AN ACT PROVIDING A LOCAL OPTION FOR RANKED CHOICE VOTING IN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

    • H719/S406: AN ACT RELATIVE TO RANKED CHOICE VOTING

      • RCV is utilized across the country in a number of major municipalities as well as statewide in Maine. The initiative strives to achieve a majority consensus where citizens may rank their candidates 1,2,3... in order to ensure more accurate representation in their government functions at the local, state and federal levels.
